Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA (August 1, 2012) - The Arena Football League announced the defensive players named to the All-Arena team. Philadelphia Soul DB Kent Richardson (6-0, 197, West Virginia) was named to the First Team All-Arena and DL Bryan Robinson (6-3, 285, Wesley) was named to the Second Team All-Arena.
"Kent Richardson is so deserving of this honor," said Soul head coach Doug Plank. "He is so consistent in his play. The team knows that if a ball hits him in the hands he's going to catch it, and that gives the whole team confidence."
"Robinson is another player that adds so much to not only our defensive, but our team as a whole," Plank continued. "I think he set the tone for the team in the first game of our season when he blocked New Orleans' last second kick. Robinson has added so much to this team with his athletic skill on the field and his vocal authority off the field."
Richardson has had a breakout season by setting the Soul record for interceptions in a single season with 14 (Eddie Moten had 13 in 2005). In just his second AFL season, Kent has tallied 80.5 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 14 interceptions returned for 178 yards and two touchdowns, 15 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The leading candidate for RevHoney Defensive Back of the Year and Riddell Defensive Player of the Year is tied for No. 1 in the AFL in interceptions (14), No. 4 in interception return yards (178), No. 5 in passes defended (29) and tied for No. 6 in interception return touchdowns (2). The second-year starter earned Riddell Defensive Player of the Game four times, AFL Playmaker of the Game once and the League's Defensive Player of the Week once in 2012.
Robinson has had a record-setting season and been a force in opposing backfields. Robinson set the AFL record for blocked kicks in a single season (7) and is tied for second in the League for tackles for loss (13.0). He is tied for No. 3 in forced fumbles (5) and No. 4 for sacks (10.0). Robinson's 10 sacks set the franchise single-season record. Robinson earned Riddell Defensive Player of the Game once and National Guard MVP of the Game once in 2012.
Richardson is joined on the First Team All-Arena defense by DL Joe Sykes, San Jose, DL Mike Lewis, Utah, DL Victor Degrate, San Antonio, MLB Aaron Robbins, Jacksonville, JLB Alvin Ray Jackson, New Orleans, DB Jason Simpson, Iowa, DB Terrance Sanders, Spokane and ST PJ Berry, Pittsburgh.
The Second Team All-Arena Defense is comprised of DL Scooter Berry, Jacksonville, DL Luis Vasquez, Milwaukee, MLB Francis Maka, San Jose, JLB Marcus Everett, Milwaukee, DB Arkeith Brown, Arizona, DB Jeremy Kellem, New Orleans, DB Tracy Belton, Georgia and ST Terrance Sanders, Spokane. The AFL will announce the offensive players who earned an All-Arena honor Thursday.
