Rhodes, Taylor Win UFL Pow

October 10, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) - Virginia Destroyers News Release

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA (October 10, 2011) The Virginia Destroyers dominated United Football League Player of the Week honors following Friday's 28-6 victory over the Sacramento Mountain Lions on Oct. 7 at Sportsplex.

Destroyers running back DOMINIC RHODES set various United Football League single-game records in earning his second offensive player of the week award of the season.

Rhodes, who shared the Week 1 award with Chase Clement of the Las Vegas Locos, was joined on the Week 4 honor roll by Destroyers linebacker TONY TAYLOR and Las Vegas Locomotives kicker CLINT STITSER who claimed the defensive and special teams awards, respectively. Taylor also received the honor two weeks ago when the Destroyers defeated Las Vegas 34-17.

Rhodes ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in Friday's win. He set the following UFL single-game records in the process:

Most rushing yards (217)

Most touchdowns (3)

Most rushing touchdowns (3)

Most points scored (18)

Highest rushing average (12.1)

Most all-purpose yards (234)

"It was a very special night for me," said the former Indianapolis Colt. "Our line was blocking well, and our tight ends and receivers -- just great blocking in front of me tonight. It wouldn't matter how many yards I rushed for, as long as we're 3-0. It's an awesome feeling."

Taylor continues to impress as one of the best linebackers in the UFL in 2011. On Friday night, he tied for the team lead in total tackles with six, had two interceptions for 34 yards and added a half-tackle for loss. Taylor is tied with Sacramento Mountain Lions safety John Busing, who also had two picks in the same game, for the league lead in interceptions this season with three.

Taylor made his UFL debut for the Tuskers in 2010, starting the final three regular-season games and the UFL Championship Game at middle linebacker. He had two interceptions and 23 total tackles during the regular season, and four solo tackles in the title game. He played with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007, playing in all 16 regular season games, registering 12 tackles.

Rhodes, who starred for the Florida Tuskers in 2010, is also the UFL career leader in points scored (90), touchdowns scored (15) and 100-yard rushing games (four).

As for the league's single-season rushing record, which Rhodes already owns, he is threatening to re-set that one as well, despite having just six games to do so. He ran for 551 yards for the Tuskers last season, and already has 369 yards on the ground in just three games in 2011.

Rhodes is also closing in on the all-time career total rushing yards record of 945 yards currently held by Cory Ross of the Mountain Lions. He has 920 career yards and could catch Ross and pass the 1,000-yard mark when the Destroyers travel to Sacramento for Saturday's game against the Mountain Lions.

During a six-year Indianapolis Colts career, Rhodes rushed for a game-high 113 yards and scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl XLI win over the Chicago Bears. He rejoined the Colts at the end of the 2010 UFL season and helped them to secure a postseason berth.

Stitser, in just his second UFL game, was 3-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points in Las Vegas 30-10 home win Saturday night over the Omaha Nighthawks. Stitser has spent time with the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins in the NFL since finishing his college career at Fresno State in 2007.
