Rochester Rhinos News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Raging Rhinos have announced that the team has released defender Bill Sedgewick.
Sedgewick, the 6-0, 185-pound defender from Wheatridge, Colorado, played the past six seasons with the Rhinos. Sedgewick ranks fourth on the Rhinos all-time list in games played (146), games started (130), minutes played (11,817) and fouls (206). Overall, in his eight-year A-League career, Sedgewick has appeared in 197 regular season games, including 51 with the Montreal Impact (1997-1998). Sedgewick was a member of two Rhinos' A-League Championships (2000 and 2001) and the team's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title in 1999.
Sedgewick also has been a prominent fixture in the Rochester community. Last season, Sedgewick started the "Quarters for Cancer" program to help benefit the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong. In the offseason, Sedgewick founded the "Strides for Shaun" campaign for Rhinos teammate Shaun Tsakiris, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer last fall. Sedgewick collected sponsorship and donations to run the Los Angeles Marathon on March 6th, in tribute to Tsakiris and his battle.
"Bill has been an important part of our family both on-and-off the field," Rhinos Vice President and General Manager Chris Economides said. "It was a very difficult decision, but it is the unfortunate side of our business. We wish him the best of luck. I know that being the type of quality individual that he is, Bill will land on his feet somewhere soon."
The Rhinos will host the Puerto Rico Islanders on Saturday, May 7th at Frontier Field. The game will be broadcast locally on Fickle 93.3 FM and on the internet on www.rhinossoccer.com. The first 10,000 fans will receive magnet schedules, courtesy of Salvatore's. Tickets are available at the Frontier Field box office, or by calling the Rhinos ticket department at 585-454-5425.
