TAMPA, FL â United Soccer Leagues announced the Teams of the Week for Week 2 of the season, honoring Portland's Edwin Miranda and Charlotte's Chris McClellan as the Players of the Week.
Portland Timbers midfielder Edwin Miranda paced his squad to a 2-2 tie at home against the Minnesota Thunder Friday night, assisting on both first half goals. The following night, he stepped in as a defender to help lead the Timbers to a 2-1 road win over the rival Seattle Sounders on Saturday.
Just three minutes after the Thunder silenced the crowd with the opening goal, Miranda served a perfect cross into the box which Scott Benedetti finished to equalize the score at 1-1 in the 14th minute. Just a minute later, Miranda served a free kick into the box. This time, Scot Thompson found the back of the net as his header from point-blank range sailed past Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren for the 2-1 lead.
The second-year midfielder, who also scored in the season opener, saw scant minutes in the first half of 2004 before coming on to start the final 11 regular season matches. The team was 9-2-3 in games in which Miranda appeared. His lone goal of the season was the game-winner in the regular season finale against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Charlotte goalkeeper Chris McClellan earned his third consecutive shutout of the season on Saturday night against the Harrisburg City Islanders as the Eagles remain unscored upon in 2005.
McClellan, in his second year with the Eagles, faced 13 shots from the City Islanders and was forced to make three saves to earn the clean sheet. The Eagles shutout streak is now at 270 minutes.
The Broomfield, CO native spent three years playing in the PDL, earning a 6-6-5 record and four shutouts from 2000-2002 with the Denver Cougars.
