Rochester Rhinos News Release

The Rochester Rhinos will honor the Rochester Lancers and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the club's 1970 North American Soccer League (NASL) Championship when the Rhinos host the Miami FC Blues at 7 pm on Saturday, August 21st at Marina Auto Stadium.

The match to be played between the Rhinos and Miami FC Blues will feature both teams wearing throwback uniforms with Rochester sporting 1970 Lancer jerseys while Miami will bear the colors of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the NASL. The reunion will also feature special pre-match introductions and autograph sessions by members of the Lancer Alumni. In addition, a special commemorative anniversary program and the official 1970 Lancers team picture will be on sale at the match for the package price of $5. Jerseys worn by both teams will be auctioned off after the match with the proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.

The Lancers, Rochester's original professional soccer team, played its matches as a member of the American Soccer League from 1967 to 1969. After jumping to the NASL in 1970, the club captured its first and only league title, while playing its home matches at Aquinas Stadium, later renamed Holleder Memorial Stadium. The championship club was led by Carlos Meditieri, a Brazilian striker who captured NASL Most Valuable Player honors following both the 1970 and 1971 seasons. He was the only player in league history to capture the honor twice.
