Rochester Rhinos News Release
The Rochester Rhinos were defeated 3:1 by the Dayton Dutch Lions on Friday, August 2nd at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, NY, in a game that was limited to 67 minutes after an ongoing lightning delay. Rochester scored the match's first goal in the 43nd minute and maintained its lead through the 60th minute before Dayton scored three consecutive goals.
Left winger JC Banks scored the lone goal for the Rhinos, while defender Greg Preciado and forwards Brandon Swartzendruber and Gibson Bardsley each scored a goal for Dayton. Banks, Preciado and Bardsley's goals were all unassisted, and forward Thomas Garner had Dayton's only assist of the game.
In the 43rd minute JC Banks gave the Rhinos a 1:0 lead with an unassisted goal. Defender Lucas Fernandez served a 70-yard ball to Banks, who had his back turned away from the goal, inside the center of penalty box. Banks settled the ball with his right foot, turned, and shot it past the left side of Dayton's keeper Matt Williams for the 1:0 advantage.
Dayton found the equalizer in the 60th minute after an unassisted goal from defender Greg Preciado. Rochester attempted to head a ball that was served into the box from 40 yards out , but Preciado got a foot on the loose ball, and just managed to put the ball past Nicht's right side.
Two minutes later, forward Thomas Garner connected with Swartzendruber to give the Dutch Lions a 2:1 lead in the 62nd minute. Garner crossed the ball to Swartzendruber at the top of the 6-yard box from the left side of the penalty box and Swartzendruber put it into the goal past Nicht's left side.
The Dutch Lions extended its lead to 3:1 in the 65th minute after forward Gibbon Bardsley scored an unassisted goal for Dayton. The ball found Bardsley's foot after a communication problem in the Rochester Rhinos back four. Bardsley got on the loose ball and chipped it in the goal over Nicht's head.
The loss mathematically eliminates the Rochester Rhinos from the 2013 USL PRO playoffs. The Rhinos had successful qualified for the playoffs in each of their previous 18 years in existance.
