Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
HOUSTON, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC dropped a tightly fought match against Houston Dynamo FC at PNC Stadium on Tuesday night to end their 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup run, 2-1.
RGV FC suffered an own goal early in the match at the 10th minute; Frank Nodarse attempted a diving clearance with his head but deflected the shot into his own goal, 0-1. RGV FC matched pace and played a physical first half to limit the Dynamo damage.
The Toros closed out the opening half with three shots, one on target as they looked to equalize before the break.
At the 46th minute, RGV FC nearly found light as Emilio Ycaza sent a quick shot to the bottom right side of the goal where a diving Michael Nelson made the save to corner. On the ensuing corner, Teenage Hadebe netted the ball in his own goal to equalize the match, 1-1. Hadebe attempted the clearance with his feet but found a bad bounce on the deflection to route the ball into his own net.
Frank Lopez drew a penalty at the 59th minute as he dribbled past defenders inside the left side of the box and was fouled. On the penalty try, he sent a hard shot to the right side of the goal but was denied by Michael Nelson on a diving save to keep the match level,1-1.
At the 81st minute Houston Dynamo attacked the Toros goal where a shot from Pasher at the center of the goal was cleared by Wahab Ackwei who stood at the goal line, deflecting with a hard header to save the net as Colin Miller recovered after blocking a shot on the ground from Pasher on the prior attempt.
Dynamo struck at the 92nd minute on a header shot to the right side of the goal off a short cross that developed from the left side of the goal, 1-2. The goal proved to be the dagger of the match as Houston Dynamo snuck away with a victory, advancing in their first appearance of the 2022 U.S Open Cup to the fourth round.
RGV FC resumes USL Championship play on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30pm CST as they host Sacramento Republic SC at H-E-B Park. To see more matchday information, visit www.rgvfc.com.
