EL PASO, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (5-5-9) drew their Copa Tejas match against El Paso Locomotive FC (9-5-5) on Saturday night. Wilmer Cabrera scores lone goal, Deric makes five saves in positive performance on the road.
After an average start from both sides, a hydration break revived the energy on the pitch for Rio Grande Valley as they took advantage of a well-played long lob into the box from Tomas Ritondale.
From the left wing, Ritondale lobbed a ball into the box where Wilmer Cabrera patiently waited on the right end, Cabrera then one-touch redirected the ball into the direction of the net as a closing Benny Diaz was caught flat footed due to a change in ball path, slightly being tricked to his left side, and leaving no time to react as the Toros made it 0-1 at the 38th minute; The goal marked Cabrera's sixth of the campaign, Ritondale picked up assist number two of the year.
Eric Calvillo forced a save from Tyler Deric as the keeper made a low-to ground save while diving to his right side, clearing the ball to corner, 0-1, at the 80th minute.
A few minutes later, near regulation time, Josue Gomez played a header toward goal to beat Deric and equalize the match at 1-1 as the clock struck 87 minutes played. This was the sixth shot on goal of the night for Locomotive FC, which came at the right time for the home side. Eric Calvillo earned assist credits on the play as he was the service maker on the crossing ball from the right wing into the box.
Tyler Deric was forced to make five saves to keep the match manageable and give his side a single point, along with the offensive help from Andres Cabrera.
