Monterey Bay FC News Release
SEASIDE, California - Monterey Bay F.C. (7-7-6, 27 points) fell 3-1 to Oakland Roots SC (7-6-6, 27 points) in a derby at Cardinale Stadium, presented by Cannery Row Company. Alex Dixon scored his ninth goal of the campaign to surpass the Club record for goals scored in a single season with 14 matches to play, but it was not enough for a result as the visitors netted three of their own.
Oakland looked to have the opening goal just two minutes into the match when Lindo Mfeka tapped the ball into the back of the net from the left side of the six-yard box, but he was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed. In the 13th minute, Roots SC forward Jeciel Cedeño got behind the Union back line to force Antony Siaha off his line and into a tackle inside the box. The ref pointed to the spot and Johnny Rodriguez converted to the goalkeeper's left to put the visitors up 1-0. In the 29th minute, Morey Doner chased a long ball down the right sideline all the way to the endline before playing it back to Chase Boone at the top right corner of the box, who then laid it off to Dixon at the half circle. After cutting back to his right, Dixon launched the ball into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. Four minutes later, Oakland caught the Union defense out of position and retook the lead at 2-1. In the 41st minute, Simon Dawkins orchestrated a run down the middle of the pitch before playing Christian Volesky into the box with a through ball. Volesky beat the defender to the ball, but his left-footed shot was covered up by the goalkeeper.
Monterey Bay earned a couple of chances after the hour mark. In the 62nd minute, a ball over the top toward Dixon missed his head by inches and out for a goal kick. Two minutes later, the Crisp and Kelp pushed on the counter with Doner down the right side. His low cross into the middle was deflected on its way through, falling at the feet of Dixon who was staring down an open net after the Oakland goalkeeper dove for the ball out of his reach, but the shot missed over the top of the crossbar to leave the Union still searching for the equalizer. Oakland extended their lead with a third goal in the 78th minute. Four minutes later, Sam Gleadle was taken down just outside the box to earn a free kick after a run down the right side, but the ensuing ball in from Dawkins was cleared away by the Oakland defense. Then in the 90+1 minute, Gleadle saw another opportunity from a tight angle on the right side, but his shot missed wide of the left post and the match ended 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
