Terre Haute Rex News Release
TERRE HAUTE - The Terre Haute REX will look to three-peat as Prospect League Western Division champions with a roster that includes a quartet of Wabash Valley players. Indiana State University standouts Tyler Wampler and Josh Dove will reunite with former Little League and high school rivals Cody Gardner (Wright State), Tim Johnson (Vincennes) and Bryan Nacke (Vincennes) for the summer season.
"The past few seasons we have been able to establish an expectation of high-quality baseball for our organization by reaching the Prospect League's post-season. With Ronnie Prettyman's leadership, we have been able to put together a talented team that can continue to build on this," said Casey DeGroote, REX general manager.
The 2013 roster features 27 players from 15 different teams across the country. Together, these players form a talented REX roster of some of the best college baseball players in the nation.
DeGroote is pleased that the REX will be led by four veteran players, Dove, Nick Johnson (Mesa Community College), Kyle Kempf (Southern Indiana), and Kyle Zimmerman (Wayne State).
"These guys understand what we are working to accomplish. We will be counting on their leadership to help bring great baseball to Terre Haute for our fans," said DeGroote.
DeGroote is also excited about the wealth of experience that four Indiana State juniors bring to the roster. Dove will be joined by college teammates Wampler, Owen Conway, and Daniel Peterson. Indiana State earned the Missouri Valley Conference 2012 outright season championship and is in the hunt for post season play this year.
Beyond the on field talent this summer, the REX will welcome a new coaching staff. In his first year, head coach Ronnie Prettyman has assembled a staff that brings a wealth of knowledge to the team, lead by
Neil Walton of Santa Cruz, Calif., a former college teammate.
"I'm really looking forward to learning from him," Prettyman said of Walton, recalling their days together at Cal State Fullerton. "We learned a lot from each other as players and now we are both young coaches looking to improve ourselves and our team."
Walton recently received his master's degree in sport psychology from Cal State Fullerton.
The REX will also look to the guidance of 2010 Indiana State graduate Ben Ferrell this season. Ferrell was named Honorable Mention All-Conference during his senior baseball season with the Sycamores.
The 2013 season begins at home on May 28 at 7:05 p.m. The REX will host the Quincy Gems at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium. View the full 2013 REX roster or get ticket information at www.thREXbaseball.com.
