Greensboro Revolution News Release
The Revolution didn't know what to expect when the Atlanta Thoroughbreds came to town, but they quickly learned that they were in for a defensive battle. Atlanta took an early 6-0 lead on a Norvel Mackenzie 1 yard TD rush. A botched hold on the extra point kept the lead at 6 points, but a 49 yard field goal in the second quarter extended the Thorooughbred's lead to 9. The Revolution bounced back quickly, however, and made it a 3 point game after a 2 yard Willie Harris TD run. The Thoroughbred's defense held the Revolution to it's lowest first half point total and didn't look to back down in the second half. The Revolution had other plans and decided that they were going to pound the ball on the ground in the second half and make it a physical contest. After a hard fought 3rd quarter the Revolution looked to the leg of kicker Shawn Thomas to get them back in the game, and that's exactly what he did; hitting a career long 53 yard field goal.
The 4th quarter was sure to be an exciting one as the two teams went into it tied at 9 and hungry for a victory. CB Clarence Headen started the quarter out with a bang, intercepting a ball from QB JR Revere on the first play of the quarter. The Revolution then methodically drove down the field and punched in another TD to take their first lead 16-9. The 4 yard rush by Dennis Evans was his first on the day. While squandering their early lead, the Thoroughbred's weren't about to give up just yet, marching quickly down the field and scoring a Touchdown with just over 6 minutes left in the game. It seemed as though Atlanta was ready to tie it up, but another dropped snap on the extra point kept the Revolution ahead by 1. With time running out the Revolution once again drove down the field and smashed in another rushing TD by Dennis Evans extending the lead to 8 with just over 3 minutes remaining. It would only take 3 plays for the Thoroughbreds to reach the endzone again and once again put the game in doubt. But on the two point conversion, Clarence Headen made a great jump on a pass bound for the endzone and knocked it away to seal the victory for the Revolution.
This was by far the closest game of the season; coming down to the last minute of regulation and at some points looked as if overtime would come into play, but the Revolution held on to their 4th victory of the season. The Thoroughbreds fought hard but came away with their second 2 point loss of the season and fell to 0-2 on the year. The 4-1 Revolution now will travel to Cincinnati to face the Division rival Marshals. Last time these two teams met, the Revolution came away with a 64-54 victory. Then the team travels to Atlanta before coming back home to face the Jacksonville Lions for the second and final time this season on May 26th. Make sure to check back for updates on the upcoming games and for more information on how you can get involved with the Greensboro Revolution.
