Richmond Revolution News Release
ROCHESTER, NY: The Richmond Revolution traveled to Rochester, NY to take on the Rochester Raiders tonight, following their bye week, and dropped their first game of the season 33-29. Despite a three touchdown performance from QB Bryan Randall, the Revolution failed to capitalize on good field position throughout the night, having to settle for 5 field goal attempts by K Chris Segaar.
The Revolution struggled on special teams, making only 2 of their attempted field goals. One kick was blocked, one field was missed wide left, and one kick lost 19 yards after a botched snap. The botched snap led to a first and goal for the Raiders at the Revolution 1 yard line, with the Raiders scoring on the first play to take the lead for good. The Revolution also struggled to stop the run against the Raiders, giving up over 100 yards on the ground to QB Perry Patterson and RB Jamil Porter. The defense had trouble replacing one of their top pass rushers, DE Jason Holman, out with a knee sprain for last 2 weeks, even with newcomer LB Vince Hall in the lineup.
The Revolution offense was inconsistent during the game, unable to move the ball on the ground, losing 14 total yards in the game on 13 carries. Randall and DB Demarcus James led the team with 13 yards rushing each, while RB Travis Valentine and Segaar each had -19 yards. Randall threw for 139 yards to five different receivers, but only completed 45% of his 36 pass attempts. WR Aaron Alexander led the Revolution with 6 receptions for 38 yards and two touchdowns, while WR Antwun Williams led the team with 39 yards. Randall also committed two turnovers, throwing an interception in the fourth quarter and losing a fumble in the second.
Despite all of the negative aspects of the game there were signs of life with the offense as Randall completed 3 passes for over 20 yards and the defense registered their second safety of the season. Demarcus James also returned 8 kickoffs for 151 yards, an average of over 18 yards per return. The receiving corps was missing injured WR Damon "Redd" Thompson, also out with a knee sprain, one less serious than Holman's injury.
The Revolution return home next weekend for a game against the division leading West Michigan Thunderhawks. The team will be wearing special pink jerseys sponsored by the Virginia Cancer Patient Fund, that will be auctioned off during the game, with all proceeds going to the fund. The first 1000 women in the building will receive a pink tote bag courtesy of Haley-GMC and Richmond Promotional Products.
