Renteria, Beavers set pitching rotation

April 4, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Beavers manager Rick Renteria today announced his season-opening pitching rotation. The Beavers begin the 2007 season at Fresno on Thursday. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

The rotation includes Cesar Carrillo and Jared Wells, two of the San Diego Padres' top 10 prospects. Carrillo is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the organization and Wells is rated No. 9.

All 144 games in 2007 can be heard live on KKAD AM-1550 and at www.portlandbeavers.com.

April 5 - at Fresno (7:05 p.m.)

Jack Cassel (RHP) vs. Matt Palmer (Fresno)

A veteran of seven professional seasons, Cassel was used primarily in relief during the first six years of his career, but the right-hander made 23 starts among his 30 appearances between Class AA Mobile and Portland last season. The 26-year-old, who marks his third season with the Beavers, will be the seventh different Opening Day starter in seven seasons since Portland rejoined the Pacific Coast League in 2001.

April 6 - at Fresno (7:05 p.m.)

Ryan Ketchner (LHP) vs. Patrick Misch (Fresno)

Limited to 13 appearances (2 starts) in 2006 after missing the entire 2005 season following "Tommy John" surgery, Ketchner has 65 career starts among his 127 total appearances. The lone left-hander in the season-opening rotation, Ketchner, 24, pitched at three different levels in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization last season while continuing to recover from surgery.

April 7 - at Fresno (7:05 p.m.)

Jared Wells (RHP) vs. Tim Lincecum (Fresno)

Wells, one of the top pitching prospects in the Padres organization, marks his fifth professional season and has started all but one of his 94 career appearances. The 6-foot-4 right-hander split the 2006 season between Class AA and Triple-A Portland, combining for a 6-12 record and a 5.16 ERA in 27 starts. A 31st-round draft choice of the Padres in 2002, Wells was the Padres' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2005.

April 8 - at Fresno (2:05 p.m.)

Cesar Carrillo (RHP) vs. Erick Threets (Fresno)

One of the top pitching prospects in professional baseball, Carrillo returns to game action after missing the second half of the 2006 season due to a lingering right forearm strain. The 22-year-old right-hander is the youngest player on the Beavers roster and made his Triple-A debut with the club last season, but was limited to just one outing with the Beavers before landing on the disabled list. Carrillo was selected by the Padres in the first round (18th overall) of the 2005 draft and is one of just nine players from that season's first-round class to advance as high as Triple-A entering the 2007 campaign. If the rotation holds true, Carrillo is in line to start the Beavers home opener against the Grizzlies on April 13.

April 9 - at Sacramento (7:05 p.m.)

Justin Germano (RHP) vs. Kevin Olsen (Sacramento)

Germano, 24, returns to the Beavers after a one-and-a-half-year absence. The right-hander spent the majority of the 2004 and 2005 campaigns with the Beavers, going 16-11 with a 3.53 ERA in 39 starts with the club before being traded to Cincinnati for third baseman Joe Randa late in the 2005 season. Germano owns three complete-game shutouts in his time with the Beavers and has pitched in the major leagues with San Diego and Cincinnati.
