Reno Aces Game Notes vs. Iowa Cubs

June 13, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Jake Buchanan will make his 12th start of the season tonight against the Iowa Cubs. Buchanan enters having allowed just three earned runs in the month of June and having struck out seven and eight in his last two starts. Ildemaro Vargas is riding a 12-game hit streak and Yasmany Tomas is coming off a 3-for-5 performance in Memphis.

Last Game: Yasmany Tomas and Jimmie Sherfy came on late to steal a win away from Memphis. The Aces scored three runs in the top of the 9th courtesy of a Tomas two-run home run with two outs finishing the comeback effort, winning 7-6. Sherfy, who entered in the eighth inning, tossed two scoreless to secure his first win of the 2018 season. Offensively, the Aces had six players with multi-hit performances and Ildemaro Vargas extended his season-high hit streak to 12 with a single in the top of the first.

Road Trippin': The Aces just completed a stretch of 20 road games in their last 25. Monday's win in Memphis gives the Aces a 10-10 record on the road during that span and a record of 13-12 overall. Reno is 30-35 on the season. Over their last 10 games, the Aces are 6-4 and are batting .272 with 12 home runs. In their last five games, Reno is 4-1 with a batting average north of .300. Monday was the first time this season the Aces won when trailing after eight innings of play (1-32).

On the Move: The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated C Jeff Mathis from the Paternity Leave list and optioned Braden Shipley back to Reno. Shipley, 26, has made two relief appearances for the D-backs, tossing 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings with one strikeout (0 walks). The Nevada alum is 3-4 for the Aces this season and has appeared in 11 games (6 starts). On June 8, in Memphis, Shipley recorded his first career save (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER).

Mighty Mouse: Jimmie Sherfy has been dominant in the Pacific Coast League this season. The right-hander has made 17 appearances, recorded 10 saves, a win, and has struck out 32 batters in 19.2 innings. A University of Oregon alum, Sherfy is the Aces all-time saves leader with 42. Sherfy was named to the 2017 Pacific Coast League All-Star team and is on pace to best his numbers from last season.

League Leaders: A number of Aces have played their way into the Pacific Coast League leaderboard. Cesar Puello is 7th in batting with an average of .333 and the leader in On-base percentage (.455). Ildemaro Vargas leads the league with 256 AB's and is second-best with 12.23 total plate appearances/SO ratio. Taylor Clarke is in 4th place with 68 total strikeouts and 5th with a SO/9IP ratio of 9.56. Joey Krehbiel is fifth with a ratio of 9.98 baserunners per 9 IP.

Story Time: On this day in 1999, Omar Olivares tied a major league record by hitting four Diamondbacks. The Angels' hurler becomes the 19th pitcher to hit four batters in a game, but the second Anaheim moundsman in three weeks to tie the dubious mark as teammate Steve Sparks also plunked four hitters on May 22. On June 13, 2012, Matt Cain tossed the fifth no-hitter and second perfect game of the season when he retires 27 consecutive batters in the Giants' 10-0 rout of the Astros at AT&T Park. The San Francisco right-hander, with the help of two great defensive plays from outfielders Melky Cabrera and Gregor Blanco, becomes the first pitcher in the 129-year history of the franchise and the 22nd in major league history to accomplish the feat.
