Richmond Renegades News Release
The Richmond Renegades today announced that President and General Manager, Allan B. Harvie, Jr. will be under an SPHL contract and in uniform for the March 10th game against the Fayetteville FireAntz.
"He will definitely see some ice time and will probably start," stated Renegades Head Coach John Brophy.
March 10th is the night that the Renegades are honoring Jessica Beck, the late daughter of local radio personality Jeff Beck and his wife Joyce. Jessica, a member of the Ohio State synchronized swim team and former student athlete at Douglas Freeman High School in Richmond passed away in her sleep on September 15, 2006. The Renegades goal is to raise $20,000 to fund the Jessica Beck Memorial Scholarship Fund. The night will be themed as a race night with heavy participation from Richmond International Raceway and various other local tracks including the Virginia International Raceway.
Harvie will turn 61 on March 8th and will become the oldest person this century to play in a professional hockey game. In recorded hockey history he will become the second oldest player to ever appear in a professional game. During the 1997-98 season Gordie Howe appeared for one shift with the Detroit Vipers of the IHL at age 70.
"We are pulling out all the stops to make this night a financial success for Jessica," stated Harvie. "Being the oldest person this century and the second oldest to ever play in a pro game should increase the value of my jersey for the auction following the game. This is all for Jessica."
"We want to thank Bill Coffey, the league Director of Hockey Operations and Coach John Marks of Fayetteville for allowing us the opportunity to make this happen in Jessica's memory," stated Harvie.
The Renegades will be wearing a special racing themed jersey that will be auctioned in a live auction following the game. In addition, Harvie will be placing the original first Renegades jersey from 1990 on the auction block. Many local businesses lead by President Doug Fritz of Richmond International Raceway have made donations of products or services for auction. Sports figures have also donated memorabilia for auction. A limited number of a special Jessica heart patch will be for sale that night. All proceeds will go to benefit the Jessica Beck Memorial Scholarship Fund.
