Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

NILES, O.H. - The two best records in the New York-Penn League met at Eastwood Field on Saturday. The Hudson Valley Renegades entered with a 0.5 game lead over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and extended that mark to 1.5 games with a 1-0 win.

Scrappers starting pitcher Luis Oviedo's streak of innings without giving up an earned run ended in the top of the second inning at 28.0. Prior to Saturday's start, he had not allowed an earned run to score since June 16 versus West Virginia. Hudson Valley's Erik Ostberg doubled to right field to lead off the second inning. He scored two batters later on an RBI single by Jake Stone to give Hudson Valley their lone run of the game, which would be enough to conquer Mahoning Valley (16-11). Hudson Valley (18-10) plated its one run on six hits throughout the game.

Mahoning Valley's offense was limited to just three hits on the evening - two in the second inning and one in the third inning. Hudson Valley's pitching staff walked more Scrappers batters (four) than they allowed hits to. Hudson Valley starter Blake Pflughaupt kept Mahoning Valley scoreless in six innings, allowing all three hits and walking three. Tanner Dodson tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two baserunners on a walk and a hit batter.

The Scrappers have now lost four in a row and seven of its last ten games. Despite this, they still lead the Pinckney Division by two games over the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn lost to Aberdeen, 8-2, on Saturday.
