TODAY'S OPPONENT:
The New Orleans Zephyrs are the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. This is the first year the Mets are the parent club. The Zephyrs were affiliated with Washington in 2005-2006. Last year, the Zephyrs finished third in the American South Division with a 72-71 record.
VS. NEW ORLEANS:
The Zephyrs took two of the three games completed June 15-17 at Zephyr Field. The finale of that series was suspended and was made up Aug. 19. The RedHawks took three of four from the Zephyrs April 26-29 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The Hawks outscored the Z's 26-12. The RedHawks hit three of their nine April homers in the series. Last season at Zephyr Field, the Z's took seven of eight, sweeping a four-game set June 30-July 3.
TODAY'S GAME:
This is game 129 of the season, and the finale of a 4-game series between Oklahoma and New Orleans. This is the 12th of 16 meetings between the RedHawks and Redbirds this season.
LAST GAME:
The RedHawks took a 2-1 series lead, with a 6-2 win last night. With the game tied at one in the top of the second inning, Chris Stewart hit a 2-run homer, giving the RedHawks a 3-1 lead. The RedHawks added single runs in the third and fourth innings on solo homers from Nate Gold and Kevin Mahar as they built a 5-1 lead. Each team added another run to make the final score 6-2. Starter Chris Baker picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Edinson Volquez
makes his seventh start of the season for the RedHawks. He struck out a RedHawk season-high 11 hitters Tuesday against Memphis, losing 1-0. Volquez was 0-2 with a 3.04 ERA in four starts against the Zephyrs last season. Adam Bostick gets the start for the Z's. Bostick lost his only start against the RedHawks this season April 26 at The Brick, allowing seven runs on nine hits, including a Victor Diaz solo homer, in 4.2 innings.
REDHAWKS ON THE ROAD:
The RedHawks improved to 18-7 in their last 25 road games. The Hawks are hitting .277 with 32 homers in the last 25 road games. They have outscored their opponents 145-87 during that time. The pitching staff has a 3.00 ERA in that stretch.
GOLD RUSH:
Gold continues to put up big power numbers this month after hittig another home run last night. He has nine homers with 20 RBIs in 19 August games. Gold leads the RedHawks with 22 homers and 89 RBIs. The RedHawks improved to 11-2 in the last 13 games Gold has homered.
FRANKLYN THE CLOSER: Franklyn German
has converted his last two save chances. He leads the Hawks with five saves. He has allowed only one run, with 13 strikouts in his last eight appearances, spanning 8.1 innings. German pitched the ninth last night in a non-save situation, allowing a hit with a walk and a strikeout.
FACING ANOTHER LEFTY:
The RedHawks face a lefty for the third game in a row. For the season, the Hawks are 20-24 against lefthanders, hitting .286 with 26 homers. The RedHawks are 4-3 in games a lefty has started in August.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Freddy Guzman
leads the league with 48 stolen bases. Tug Hulett is fifth with 85 runs scored.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks are 8-9 on Tuesday this season, and they're 15-17 in the last game of a series...the RedHawks are 5-0-1 in their last six road series...the Hawks have at least one extra-base hit in 22 straight games... Victor Diaz has 26 RBIs in his last 32 games...Hulett is hitting .325 since June 27th, raising his batting average 37 points to .275...Scott Feldman hasn't allowed an earned run in his last seven appearances out of the bullpen, dating back to Aug. 3. He has allowed just four hits while striking out seven in 7.2 innings.
