Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish and the Juice battled it out into the late hours on the eve of Independence Day. In what seemed to play out like a Hollywood baseball epic with long homeruns and great defensive plays, the Juice came out on top of the Redfish as they plated 2 runs in the top of the 11th inning to steal a win at the Charlotte Sports Park 7-5.
The Juice got to Chaffardet early with 4 straight hits to start the ballgame. Al Corbeil pushed an RBI double to the wall in left to score Luke Barganier and Eddie Kim brought home Julius Thames on an RBI single. The Juice plated another run and took a 3-0 lead.
Bradenton added two more runs in the 3rd inning to take a 5-0 lead. Kane, who had 10 Ks in his first start against the Redfish, pitched 4 scoreless innings and didn't allow the Redfish to advance a runner past second base. Billy Kovatch, Jason Hurst and Millard Dawson all got that far, but were left stranded as the Redfish left a runner on base in each of the first 4 innings.
The Redfish finally squeezed Kane as Mike Muscato singled to lead off the bottom of the 5th inning. Aaron Simmons, who pinch-hit, pitched and played first base, singled and Dawson got the Redfish on the board as he grounded into a fielder's choice that plated Muscato. Kovatch bunted his way to first, and pinch-hitter Brad Thoma ripped an RBI single to right and the Redfish were within 3 at 5-2. With two on and only 1 out, Josh Murray crushed a 390 foot 3-run homerun that just stayed fair and the game was tied at 5 after 5 innings.
Chaffardet and Kane each took no-decisions. Chaffardet pitched 3.2 innings with 3 ER on 7 hits and 2 Ks. Kane lasted 5.0 innings with 5 ER on 8 hits and 6 Ks. The game was handed over to the bullpen and both teams' relievers kept it scoreless and sent the game to extra innings. The Juice bullpen, which used 5 pitchers on the night, combined to throw 5 scoreless innings with 1 hit, 5 BB, and 4 Ks.
Through 10 innings, the Redfish bullpen was up to the challenge. Six relievers combined to throw 5.1 scoreless innings with 4 hits, 3 BB, and 6 Ks. No two strikeouts were bigger for the Redfish than the ones tossed by Aristedes Almener to end the top of the 10th inning and start off the 11th inning. The Juice hitters outlasted the Redfish relief as in the top of the 11th inning with Corbeil and Kim aboard, Juice leftfielder Mikela Olsen blooped the game winning 2 RBI double to centerfield. The Redfish defense though torched Olsen as he tried to tag up on a Noah Perry fly-out with a 9-6-5 putout to end the inning.
A crowd of 4,314 stayed until the bitter end to see if their Redfish could either tie the game or take home a win. William Plaza, Erik Quarberg and Billy Kovatch each walked to load the bases in the bottom of the 11th inning. With 2 outs, Brad Thoma gave Juice reliever Marshall Plouffe's pitch a ride to centerfield but it landed right in the glove of Barganier as Bradenton juiced the Redfish 7-5.
The Redfish will take on the Juice in the rubber game of the 4th installment of the Sunshine State Rivalry Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing tomorrow night, July 3rd. LHP Justin Ottman takes to the hill for the Redfish against Juice LHP Brian Gartley. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Tomorrow night is "Guaranteed Win Wednesday" presented by McDonald's with an On-Field Wing Eating Contest presented by Hooters. There will also be a 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza after the game.
