Peanuts Erase Four-Run Deficit to Shock Joes, 5-4
July 3, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, were victorious in walk-off fashion Tuesday night against the Anderson Joes. Doc Brooks had four RBI in the final two innings to propel South Georgia to a 5-4 victory.
It took a long time for the bats to get going for South Georgia. The Joes even took a lead one at-bat through the game as leadoff hitter Brandon Carter hit a home run in the top of the first to give the Joes a 1-0 lead. Through seven and a half innings, Anderson led 4-0 and the Peanuts only had four hits on the night.
Everything changed in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Peanuts. Jasha Balcom led off with a double and then Mike Caruso singled. With one out, Doc Brooks came up to the plate and mashed a ball off the scoreboard in left field to make the score 4-3. Nick Prosise singled later in the inning but was stranded.
Josh Cowles put down the Joes 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the frame, Steve Butler led off with a single. Balcom then singled and advanced Butler to third. Caruso collected his second base-hit of the day which scored Butler and tied the game 4-4. Anderson then intentionally walked Steve Garrabrants to load the bases for Doc Brooks who promptly hit the game-winning single down the left field line to score Balcom from third.
Austin Weilep got the start for the Peanuts and was not as sharp as he has been at times this season but did keep the Peanuts in the ballgame. Weilep pitched six innings allowing three runs on six hits. Jared Doyle pitched one inning allowing no runs on a hit. Cowles finished the game for the Peanuts pitching two innings. Cowles did allow a run, thanks in large part to a pop-fly that was not caught on the infield, on two hits with one strikeout.
The Peanuts and Joes finish the three game series on a special Fourth of July edition of Peanuts baseball. First pitch is 7:10 with Dumas Garcia scheduled to take the mound for the Peanuts. Tickets are still available with a fireworks spectacular taking place after the game. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Peanuts box office or logging onto southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
