Round Rock Express News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - For the second time in the last three days, the Memphis Redbirds (60-33) collected a 2-1 walkoff victory over the Round Rock Express (41-53). This time, it was DH Nick Martini blasting a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Redbirds a series sweep.
Round Rock reliever RHP Tanner Scheppers (0-2, 5.28) suffered the loss after allowing both Memphis runs on a total of five hits in two innings of relief. Redbirds LHP Ryan Sherriff (4-0, 3.07) picked up the win after limiting the E-Train to just one hit in one inning out of the bullpen.
Memphis' late comeback spoiled what was arguably the best start by Express RHP David Ledbetter in his young Triple-A career. The righty carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before C Alberto Rosario recorded a one-out single. Ledbetter finished having surrendered just the one hit and four walks while striking out six in six innings of work.
Round Rock's lone run came in the third as 2B Jason Martinson and 3B Luis Marte worked a pair of one-out singles off Memphis starter RHP Jack Flaherty before CF Drew Stubbs followed up with an RBI single of his own to put the E-Train on the board.
After four scoreless frames, Memphis charged back in the bottom of the eighth. 2B Alex Mejia singled before racing to second base on a sacrifice bunt courtesy of SS Wilfredo Tovar. In the next at-bat, Rosario singled while Mejia moved to third. After taking a wide turn around first base, Rosario found himself caught in a rundown. The quick-thinking catcher stalled the Round Rock defense just long enough to allow Mejia to sprint home with the game-tying run.
Martini then connected on Scheppers' third pitch of the ninth inning, sending the 1-1 offering just over a leaping Stubbs at the wall in center field, giving the Redbirds a 2-1 walkoff win.
Round Rock now returns home to open a four-game homestand against New Orleans. Baby Cakes RHP Scott Copeland (6-8, 5.20) is set to take the mound against an Express pitcher yet to be announced. First pitch at Dell Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
