Rochester Red Wings News Release
GAME NOTES:
-TURNING POINT: After Nate Hanson missed his first Frontier Field home run by less than a foot with one out in the 8th inning, Brandon Boggs knocked home pinch-runner Eric Farris with a single to left to break a 3-3 tie... KEY MOMENT: With a runner on third and one out in the 9th inning Caleb Thielbar got Jim Negrych - the league's leading hitter - to bounce out to first, then struck out Ryan Langerhans to earn his first save of the season and preserve the Wings 4-3 victory.
-With the win the Wings have now won 10 games in April for the first time since 2008, quite a feat considering they were 2-11 on April 17... Rochester was a combined 34-51 in the previous 4 Aprils.
-The Wings bullpen of Luis Perdomo and Thielbar combined to toss 2 more shutout innings on Monday... In the last 3 games, the bullpen has thrown 8.1 shutout innings. Since April 24, the Wings bullpen has gone 3-0 with 4 saves and posted a 2.75 ERA... If you take out Thielbar's outing on 4/25 (5 r/0.1 ip), the relief corps has yielded just 1 run in the last 19.1 innings (0.47 ERA).
-Joe Benson's two-out double in the second inning extended his hit streak to a season-high 6 games... He is the first Red Wing to record a 6-game hit streak this season after the previous 5 (Herrmann, Bernier, Bigley, Farris & Colabello) failed to extend past 5 games... Benson is hitting 8-for-23 (.348) with 2 doubles, 2 triples and a home run over his hitting streak.
-Virgil Vasquez, who entered with a career 6.45 ERA against Buffalo in 4 career starts, turned in his best start of the season allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in a season-high 7.0 innings pitched... He's now allowed just 6 earned runs in 17.1 innings (3.12 ERA) over his last 3 starts... He threw only 25 balls and walked just one hitter and on the year has walked just 5 in 27.1 innings.
-After a 4-for-12 night with runners in scoring position, the Red Wings are 7-for-23 (.304) in that department the last 2 games.
