Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the series finale of a short two-game series with the Rochester Red Wings. The Yankee offense scored early, but not often as the Red Wings defeated the Yankees 5-3 on Sunday evening at Frontier Field.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first on a Ronnier Mustelier two-run shot way over the left field wall. Mustelier's seventh home run of the year came on a 1-0 pitch from Rochester starter P.J. Walters. The Red Wings struck right back in the bottom half of the first on a Danny Valencia RBI single to center.
The Yankees extended their lead to 3-1 in the top half of the second on a Chris Dickerson sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Cole Garner from third base. However, the Yankee lead soon diminished as the Red Wings scored three runs in the home half of the second to take a 4-3 lead. J.R. Towles and Tsuyoshi Nishioka roped back to back RBI singles for the inning's first two runs. Pedro Florimon capped the three-run rally in the second with a ground ball single right back up the middle.
Wilkin Ramirez added a big insurance run for the Red Wings with a line drive home run over the left-centerfield wall. Ramirez's sixth homer of the year gave Rochester a 5-3 lead.
Chris Schwinden suffered the loss for the Yankees falling to an overall record of 4-7 on the year in the International League. It was his first loss as Yankee, as he allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits. He struck out two and walked one. Caleb Thielbar picked up his first career triple-A victory for the Red Wings in relief of Wings starter P.J. Walters. Luis Perdomo picked up his first save of the season for the Red Wings.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre now travels outside the Empire State for a five game, five day series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The unique thing about the Yankees series against the IronPigs is, the first three games Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will be the visiting team, while the final two games, the Yankees will be the home team. Veteran right-hander Ramon Ortiz gets the nod for the Yankees, while Tyler Cloyd heads to the hill for Lehigh Valley.
