Norfolk Tides (33-50) @ Rochester Red Wings (44-38) - Frontier Field, Rochester, NY
LHP Jake Pettit (4-6, 6.72) vs. LHP Logan Darnell (3-4, 3.41)
TODAY'S GAME: After a 13-inning marathon Saturday night, the Wings and Norfolk Tides (Orioles) play Game 2 of their four-game series Sunday afternoon (1:05 p.m.) at Frontier Field. The Wings dropped the opener to fall to just 8-12 over their last 20 games after a 26-game stretch in which they went 20-6 . Rochester - who hasn't won consecutive games since June 12 - remains 5.0 GB of SYR in the IL North but holds a slim 1.0-game lead over both Buffalo and Columbus in the Wild Card hunt. Norfolk, owners of the 2nd worst record in the league, snapped their 3-game losing streak with last night's extra-inning win but are still only 7-15 over their last 22 games.
- This series matches the team with the highest ERA in the IL (NOR, 4.83) vs. the team with the lowest (ROC, 3.26).
- The Wings face Jake Pettit today who's making his season debut for NOR after going 4-6, 6.72 ERA 15 G (14 GS) at AA.
BRILLIANT BULLPEN: After 7 innings of relief work Saturday, in which the bullpen allowed just 3 hits (all soft singles), no walks and one unearned run, the unit's ERA over the last 8 games dipped to 1.71 (5 ER/26.1 IP). Over this 8-game stretch, the bullpen has allowed just 15 hits (5 for XBH) and only 4 walks in 26 1/3 innings . In fact, the bullpen hasn't issued a walk over their last 13 innings pitched. The relief corps has been a strength of the team all season long as they hold a 2.80 season ERA. Of the six relievers on the Wings current roster who have spent the majority of the season here (at least 16 appearances), four have an ERA of 2.41 or lower and four have a BAA of .220 or lower .
WITH A WIN TODAY, THE WINGS WILL...:
- Avoid losing consecutive games at home for the second time since April 17 (also, June 18 DH vs. PAW).
- Improve to 12-6 against the South division this season...Over the last two seasons, ROC is now 33-16 vs. IL South
MORE ABOUT LAST NIGHT...:
- The Red Wings 7-game home winning streak over Norfolk was snapped.
- The Wings played just their 5th extra-inning game of the year and first since April 27...ROC is now 1-4 in extras in '14.
- The Wings struck out a season-high 15 times...Previous season-high was 12 (3 times).
- The 11,634 fans last night was the largest crowd in the IL yesterday & the 2nd largest crowd of the season at Frontier Field.
- Alex Meyer - who had thrown 8 2/3 innings combined over his last 3 GS - allowed just one run over 6.0 IP (77/49).
GIVING UP THE LONG BALL: Wings starters have allowed a home run in 7 of the last 9 games and 22 total in 28 June games . The rotation had allowed just 13 over the first two months of the season (54 games). Each starter has allowed at least 3 HR in the month - with the exception of Trevor May who has allowed 2 HR. LHP Kris Johnson & RHP Alex Meyer have each surrendered 4 this month -- the duo had yielded just 3 combined over the first 2 months.
BEST SUPPORTING ACHTER: Wings RHP A.J. Achter (2-2, 1.60) turned in 3 perfect innings of relief on Saturday. Achter has the lowest BAA at .124 (16-129) among IL relievers -- including holding LHH's to just 5 hits in 55 AB's (.091). He also has allowed the fewest base runners per 9 IP among all league relievers (6.64) . Achter has allowed just 2 runs over his last 20.1 innings (0.89 ERA) -- spanning 11 games over which he's allowed 6 hits, 9 walks w/ 21 strikeouts. He's also stranded all 18 of 21 runners he's inherited this season and is a perfect 4-for-4 in save chances.
- Over first 38 Triple-A games, opposing hitters are batting just .153 (33-215) off Achter.
EXCELLENT EDGAR: After two more scoreless innings on Saturday, Wings reliever Edgar Ibarra extended his season-high scoreless streak to 15 1/3 innings dating back to his last inning of work on May 29 vs. SYR . Over the streak - which has spanned 8+ games - Ibarra has yielded 10 hits and 4 walks with 12 strikeouts. The 15 1/3 innings is the 4th longest scoreless streak by a Red Wings pitcher this season and the longest by a Wings reliever since Anthony Slama's 17.0-inning streak in 2012 (4/17-5/30). Prior to this streak, Ibarra had allowed at least 1 run in 8 of his first 14 outings this year.
- EI's 14 1/3-inning scoreless streak last year w/ ROC was the longest by a ROC reliever in '13
2013 Series Notes vs. NOR: For a second straight season, the Wings beat Norfolk 6-2 in the season series...In 2013, it proved important as the Wings and Tides finished in a tie atop the IL Wild Card standings but Rochester advanced to the postseason based on the head-to-head tiebreaker...The Wings swept Norfolk in a 4-game series Jul. 26-29 for the first time since Jul. 19-22, 1993 (at Silver Stadium) ...The sweep was the Wings 4th, 4-game sweep of the 2013 season (all at Frontier Field)...The Wings tied a season-high in runs scored and margin of victory with a 14-3 drubbing of the Tides on Jul. 28...The Red Wings pitching staff held Norfolk to a .210 batting average over the season series.
