Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings plan to employ a secret weapon when they complete a 2-game weekend series with the visiting Saskatoon Blades on Saturday night.
The Wheat Kings have announced that 22-year old recording artist Katherine Penfold will be on hand to perform the national anthem before the game that features the top two teams in the WHL's Eastern Division.
Originally a folk singer/songwriter from Nova Scotia, she has developed a passion for a variety of different musical genres branching to Funk, Jazz and R&B. This Brandon University student has already had airplay on CBC Radio and more recently, GROOVEFM 99.1 in Winnipeg, having written and co-written two songs for Groove Lounge Volume One. With the success of the first Volume, raising money for Hunger for Hope, she is now co-writing the 2nd Volume at the same time as completing her own debut Pop/Jazz Album, to be released this April.
Assisting Katherine on keyboard will be Shoal Lake product Geordie Waddell. A member of the Piano Performance program at B.U., he was named Most Promising Senior Pianist at the Brandon Festival of the Arts and joined "Masaki's Rising Stars of Brandon University" on their recent tour of China.
