Recording Artist To Perform Anthem

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings plan to employ a secret weapon when they complete a 2-game weekend series with the visiting Saskatoon Blades on Saturday night.

The Wheat Kings have announced that 22-year old recording artist Katherine Penfold will be on hand to perform the national anthem before the game that features the top two teams in the WHL's Eastern Division.

Originally a folk singer/songwriter from Nova Scotia, she has developed a passion for a variety of different musical genres branching to Funk, Jazz and R&B. This Brandon University student has already had airplay on CBC Radio and more recently, GROOVEFM 99.1 in Winnipeg, having written and co-written two songs for Groove Lounge Volume One. With the success of the first Volume, raising money for Hunger for Hope, she is now co-writing the 2nd Volume at the same time as completing her own debut Pop/Jazz Album, to be released this April.

Assisting Katherine on keyboard will be Shoal Lake product Geordie Waddell. A member of the Piano Performance program at B.U., he was named Most Promising Senior Pianist at the Brandon Festival of the Arts and joined "Masaki's Rising Stars of Brandon University" on their recent tour of China.

In addition to having the opportuntiy to hear from a number of B.U. musicians at Saturday's game, fans will be encouraged to support of the Eckhardt-Gramatte (E-Gre) National Music Competition 2009 Strings, by participating in the final PhysioFirst Chuck-a-Puck of the 2008-09 season.

Some lucky fan will win a pair of tickets to see Nickelback in concert at the MTS Centre this April. Saturday night's Chuck-a-Puck will be held during the second intermission.

The Eckhardt-Gramatte is held annually during the first weekend in May at the B.U. School of Music Lorne Watson Concert Hall.

Ticket sales to Saturday's game have been brisk but close to two thousand tickets remain. Fans wanting to purchase one can do so by visiting the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

The Wheat Kings and Blades will kick off the weekend Friday night at Westman Place. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
