Rebels Prepare for Defending Champs

March 25, 2006 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Raleigh Rebels News Release

RALEIGH NC - After a long bye week the undefeated Raleigh Rebels now are preparing to take on the defending AIFL Champions, the Richmond Bandits at the Richmond Coliseum on Monday Night. Along with the fact that both teams are fighting for first place in the division, both teams have something else to play for this year.

The winner of the "Capital Bowl", as it is being called because both teams play in their respective State Capitals, will receive the "Key to the City" trophy. The winner of each match-up between Raleigh and Richmond will claim the trophy to return it to their home arenas, much like the "Old Wooden Jug" that the University's of Michigan and Minnesota play for each year in college football. Rebel head coach Steven G. Folmar believes the trophy is good for the game as well as for the league, "It always adds a little something to a rivalry to be able to have a little something extra to play for. The trophy is something for the team, the fans as well as their communities to get behind. I just hope we can make this game a little more of a rivalry then we have had in the past though." The Rebels are looking for their first win in Richmond after going 0-2 there last year.

After a 17-day break in action, the Rebels (3-0) are coming off a 53-44 victory over the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers and are the only remaining undefeated team in the Southern Division. The Richmond Bandits (2-1) defeated the Daytona Beach Thunder 50-46 in a thriller last week as Richmond stopped the Thunder on three tries within their own 3-yard line as time expired to preserve the win. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
