Raleigh Rebels News Release
RALEIGH NC - On Thursday Night, the Raleigh Rebels (6-2) took advantage of a brand new playing surface, a loud crowd of 2,500 people on Dollar Seat Night, and a dominating defense to defeat the Augusta Spartans(2-5) 46-18 at Dorton Arena.
The Rebels scored on their first offensive play when quarterback David Malino found Ed Bell (6'1, 215, Elon) on a receiver screen for a 30-yard touchdown. After the Spartans scored on a Terran Haywood reception from Marvin Stone, the Rebel's offense again needed just one play as Malino now found receiver Lavel Bailey for a 32-yard hookup for a touchdown.
From there the offense seemed to coast and the defense took over. The Raleigh defense would sack Spartan quarterbacks nine times. Three from defensive end Shawn Price (6'2, 235, NC State), as well as two from lineman Terrance Chapman (6'3, 270, NC State) and two more from linebacker John Williamson (6'3, 235, ECU). Defensive back Montrail Pittman (6', 210, NC A&T) also added three more interceptions, giving him a league-leading 10 on the year.
Despite the score, the Rebel offense looked rusty after their second bye week in four weeks and the return of quarterback David Malino (6'2, 215, Wooster), who had missed three games due to surgery on his non-throwing hand. Malino finished the evening just 10-25 for 169 yards and five touchdowns, while throwing three interceptions but had also been battling a stomach virus most of the week. Lavel Bailey again paced the offense with 5 catches for 98 yards, four for touchdowns.
The Rebels will now take on the defending Champion Richmond Bandits this Thursday Night at Dorton Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm. Richmond won the first meeting between these two teams this year in Richmond 58-30.
