Real Salt Lake News Release
REAL SALT LAKE BEGINS FINAL WEEK OF PRESEASON AT FC TUCSON DESERT DIAMOND CUP
Real Salt Lake will continue on in the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup this week, taking on the New England Revolution at 5:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday and playing in the DDC Final/3rd Place game on Saturday.
The Claret-and-Cobalt went 0-1-1 in its first two Desert Diamond Cup matches, tying the New York Red Bulls 2-2 on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and falling 1-2 to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, Feb. 16. All three of RSL's DDC goals were scored by offseason additions, with FW Joao Plata and MF Cole Grossman notching strikes against New York and rookie MF John Stertzer scoring against Seattle for his first professional goal.
RSL currently sits in a tie for third in the tournament standings with New York, five points behind leaders Seattle - which has already clinched a spot in the final - and two points behind second-place New England. A win on Wednesday over the Revolution would likely put RSL in Saturday's DDC Final, which will air live on NBC Sports Network.
Real Salt Lake will return to Utah on Sunday. The team will begin preparing for its March 3 MLS season opener at 2012 Supporters' Shield winners San Jose Earthquakes next week.
Wednesday's match against New England and Saturday's 3rd Place game will be streamed live on www.RealSaltLake.com and www.MLSsoccer.com. As mentioned above, Saturday's Desert Diamond Cup Final will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network.
ESPN 700 AM's RSL coverage will continue throughout the week with RSL player and coach interviews every week day afternoon on "The Bill and Hans Show."
REAL SALT LAKE MF LUIS GIL, US U-20'S SET TO KICK OFF CONCACAF U-20 CHAMPIONSHIP
Real Salt Lake MF Luis Gil and the U.S. Under-20 national team will begin the CONCACAF U-20 Championship with a match against Haiti on Monday in Puebla Mexico. The match - which will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel - is the first of two Group A contests for the U.S., which will face Costa Rica in the Group A finale on Friday.
The top two teams from each of the Championship's four groups will advance to the tournament Quarterfinals. The four semifinalists will qualify for this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Should the U.S. advance out of Group A, it will play Canada, Cuba or Nicaragua in the Quarterfinals with a shot at the U-20 World Cup on the line.
