Rochester, NY. The ABA Rochester Razorsharks have agreed in principle with former Duke and Vanderbilt star Bill McCaffrey to become the head coach of the professional basketball team that begins play in November. McCaffrey, 33, averaged 11.6 points per game as a sophomore starter for Duke and then transferred to Vanderbilt, where he averaged 20.6 and 20.9 points per game in his junior and senior seasons leading to a consensus second team All-American in 1993. He also played in the 1991 NCAA Championship Game against Kansas.

McCaffrey served as Interim coach at St. Bonaventure and as an Asst. Coach at the University of Maine. "Bill was a terrific college player and he has college coaching experience," Razorsharks CEO/GM Orest Hrywnak said. "We're excited to have an enthusiastic young coach and are looking forward to an exciting season."

"It's an exciting opportunity to work with an excellent organization and a fine group of people," McCaffery added. "It's my first head-coaching job. I couldn't pass it up." McCaffery was in town attending the Rochester Press-Radio Club's Day of Champions dinner with Hrywnak, team director of player personnel and basketball operations, Brendan Rooney and director of scouting, Joe Comfort of Plainfield. The Razorsharks will hold an invitation only-tryout camp at St. John Fisher May 27-29. Rooney says, "The players expected to attend include former NBA player Chris Herren, former Greece Olympia High School and Niagara University star Demond Steward, former ABA star Mike Robinson from Purdue, 7-foot center Micah Brand of the University of Massachusetts and a "former Syracuse star we have our fingers crossed about."
