Justin Quenneville had a hat trick and Brent Zelenewich made 16 saves on Sunday as the Rayz beat the Austin Ice Bats 5-2 at the American Bank Center. The win for Corpus Christi moved them to 1-0-1 on the preseason after a 4-3 overtime loss in Austin on Saturday. The Rayz will close out the exhibition schedule on Monday afternoon with a 1:00pm game versus the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at the American Bank Center. The game is open to the public and free of charge. The doors will open up at noon.
With nearly 3,000 fans looking on, the Rayz wasted little time getting the game's scoring started. Quenneville scored his first goal of the night 51 seconds into the game, and Connor Hughes tallied just 27 seconds later to give the Rayz an early 2-0 lead. Hughes nearly made it 3-0 when he hit the post on a three on two rush later in the opening period. The Rayz increased their lead to 3-0 2:09 into the second period when Quenneville scored his second of the game. Austin got on the scoreboard at 3:19 when Aaron Davis slid a backhand past Brent Zelenewich to the cut the Rayz lead to 3-1. However, Corpus Christi pulled away in the second half of the game.
Quenneville completed his hat trick with a beautiful shorthanded goal, beating goaltender Andrew Martin to make the score 4-1 Rayz. In the third period, Adam Powell gave the Rayz a 5-1 lead with his goal at 10:41. Austin's Chris Affinati capped the scoring with a tally 15:41 of the third. Zelenewich got the win and Kevin Couture got the loss, splitting time with Martin. The Rayz outshot the Ice Bats 47-18.
The Rayz will finish their pre-season schedule with a Monday afternoon game at 1:00pm at the American Bank Center when they host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. The game is open to the public and free of charger. The Rayz will then drop the puck on the 2006-2007 regular season when they host the Laredo Bucks at 7:05pm on Saturday Night at the American Bank Center.
