Rayz sign big defensive addition

October 5, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, Texas – In the final week leading up to the start of training camp, the Corpus Christi Rayz made a large addition to their blueline. The Rayz have agreed to terms with defenseman, Dominic Periard for the 2004-2005 season, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President, Larry Linde announced on Tuesday. Periard becomes the 20th member under contract for the upcoming season. Central Hockey League training camp officially begins on Monday, October 11th.

Periard, who turned 24 two weeks ago, brings a lot of size and strength to the Corpus Christi defensive unit. Standing 6' 0" and weighing 230lbs., Periard has been a strong physical presence throughout his career. He will be entering his fourth professional season after breaking into the league in 2001-02 with the Austin Ice Bats, where current Rayz Head Coach, Ken McRae was an Assistant Coach at the time. Periard made an impact on both the Ice Bats and McRae that season. With 12 goals, 22 points and 107 penalty minutes, Periard made quite an entry into professional hockey, helping the Ice Bats reach the President's Cup Finals in his rookie season.

"Dominic was a force right out of the gate," said McRae. "He's always kept up his intensity level and his physical play really wears down the opposition. He's going to be a great contributor to our team this year."

McRae also mentioned that, in addition to his size, the Quebec native defenseman was valuable in many areas of the game.

"He's a good all around player," said McRae. "He can play on the power play, the penalty kill, 4 on 4 and 5 on 5. He's solid in one on one battles, which makes him an asset at all times."

Periard attended training camp with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League this season. The Rayz will be his fifth professional team and second in the CHL. Last season, Dominic had three goals, nine points and 64 penalty minutes in 24 games for the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL. Two seasons ago, Periard was called up to the AHL for four games, where he played for the Hamilton Bulldogs. Prior to turning pro, he spent four seasons with Baie-Comeau of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he increased his penalty minute total each year.

The Rayz will begin the 2004-05 season in Austin on October 22nd, and host the Laredo Bucks in the first ever event at the AmericanBank Center on November 5th and 7:05pm. Training camp officially opens up on Monday, October 11, 2004. The Rayz will host three preseason games, including one versus the Mexico National Hockey Team in the Memorial Coliseum. Preseason games begin on Thursday, October 14, 2004.
