Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, Texas: September 23, 2004 - The Corpus Christi Rayz have signed defenseman Anthony D'Arpino to a one-year agreement, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President, Larry Linde announced Thursday afternoon. The Rayz acquired D'Arpino earlier in the month from the Tulsa Oilers. D'Arpino will join the Rayz for training camp, beginning Monday, October 11th.
D'Arpino, 24, spent four years at an elite NCAA college program, playing for Boston College before turning pro. The Rayz traded for the 6'1", 220lb. Johnston, RI native on September 9th, when they dealt Jim Leger to Tulsa. D'Arpino joins a solid defensive unit in Corpus Christi, including Bernie John â the 2004 CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman. D'Arpino is a big defenseman who uses his size and strength well, while managing to stay out of the box. Last season, he limited his penalty minutes to 29 for the year.
In 2003-04, D'Arpino spent his rookie season with the Oilers, notching 17 points in 39 games. He was one of the top rookie blueliners in the CHL before his season was cut short with an injury. He has completely healed looking forward to his second professional season, and first with Corpus Christi.
"Anthony showed last season that he can have a long, successful future in this league," Rayz Head Coach, Ken McRae said. "I'm happy that his immediate future lands him in Corpus Christi. He is a solid, young defensemen who gives us a lot of depth on our blueline and strengthens our team greatly."
The Rayz will begin the 2004-05 season in Austin on October 22nd, and host the Laredo Bucks in the first ever event at the AmericanBank Center on November 5th and 7:05pm. Training camp officially opens up on Monday, October 11, 2004. The Rayz will host three preseason games, including one versus the Mexico National Hockey Team in the Memorial Coliseum. Preseason games begin on Thursday, October 14, 2004.
