Rays Topple Twins 16-9 to Take Series

PRINCETON, WV- The Princeton offense collected 17 hits and tied a season-high with 16 runs on Monday as the Rays (14-9) topped Elizabethton by a final score of 16-9 at H.P. Hunnicutt Field to take the series from the Twins (9-15).

Five different Rays batters recorded multi-hit games during the victory while three additional players added one hit each.

Rays second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz finished with a team-high five RBI in the game, including a grand slam in the seventh inning.

Rays left fielder Oscar Rojas also launched a home run for Princeton, his a solo shot in the fourth inning. Rojas finished the night with four hits, a walk, and three RBI, and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

The Rays offense scored in every inning but the sixth and the eighth on its way to the 16-9 victory.

Princeton started the scoring early, scoring three in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-4 lead over the Twins through five.

Elizabethton notched three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to come within one with Princeton 10-9, but the Rays pulled ahead again in the seventh with six insurance runs, including Tenerowicz's grand slam.

The Princeton pitching staff benefited from the robust offensive performance. Starter Willy Ortiz pitched five innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits and striking out one on the way to a victory, his fourth of the season. Pitchers Sandy Brito and Brian McAfee came on in relief, pitching one and three innings, respectively, with McAfee recording the save, his second of the season.

The Rays will continue their current six-game home stand on Tue., July 19 as they open a series against the Burlington Royals beginning at 7 p.m. at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
