South Carolina Stingrays News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - The South Carolina Stingrays (34-26-2-1) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Atlanta Gladiators (24-31-6-2) by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday night at the Infinite Energy Center.
Derek Arnold scored his first goal as a member of the Stingrays and added an assist, while Marcus Perrier had two helpers and goaltender Parker Milner picked up the win with 24 saves.
The Stingrays pulled even with the Orlando Solar Bears for fourth place and the final playoff spot in the South Division standings with 71 points.
Kelly Zajac scored the lone goal of the first frame to give the Rays a 1-0 lead when he slipped a backhand past Atlanta goaltender Dan Vladar from Arnold at 5:51.
Milner made 13 saves in the period and the Stingrays held the advantage into the first intermission.
South Carolina extended their lead to 2-0 just 1:21 into the middle period when Olivier Archambault redirected a pass by Perrier into the back of the net. Archambault's fourth goal in his last two games was also assisted by Scott Tanski.
But Atlanta fought back and tied the score at 2-2 later in the frame after Tyler Murovich scored on the power play at 4:31 and Mark Naclerio evened things up with an unassisted goal at 15:52.
Forward Patrick Megannety broke the deadlock with his second goal of the year at 10:41 of the third period to make it 3-2, knocking home a rebound off an initial shot by Joey Leach. Joe Devin recorded the second assist on the play. It was assist No. 13 on the season for both Leach and Devin.
Patrick Gaul then netted his 10th of the year at 14:59 to extend the advantage on the scoreboard for the Rays to 4-2. The goal came on a redirection off a pass by John Parker from the right wing. Defenseman Cody Corbett picked up the second assist on the play for South Carolina.
Arnold struck less than a minute later on a rebound at 15:55 to give the last insurance marker and made it 5-2. Assists on the play went to Steven McParland and Perrier.
With the helper, McParland extended his season-high point streak to eight games.
Milner finished the contest with 24 saves and earned his 21st victory of the year. Vladar also made 24 stops for Atlanta in a losing effort.
The Rays out-shot the Gladiators in the game 29-26 and were 0-for-1 on the power play. Atlanta finished 1-for-3 on the man-advantage.
