Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
Johnson City, TN - The Princeton Rays (6-6) avoided a sweep with a 6-1 victory over the Johnson City Cardinals (8-4) on Monday in Johnson City, TN.
The Rays pitching staff dominated on the mound in the rubber match with starter Willy Ortiz pitching five innings, giving up just three hits and one run-a solo home run by Cardinals right fielder Matt Fiedler.
Ortiz's performance was further steadied by the Rays bullpen, with relievers Sandy Brito and Brian McAfee pitching two scoreless innings each to finish out the victory. Ortiz was credited with the win, his second of the season, while Brito earned his first hold of the season for his efforts.
The Princeton offense recorded 12 hits in the victory, with five different Rays batters recording multi-hit games.
The Rays took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as designated hitter Trek Stemp scored on a Cardinals error and third baseman Blake Butera scored on a RBI-groundout by shortstop Adrian Rondon.
Princeton extended its lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning when first baseman Devin Davis doubled in a run, then scored on a Johnson City error. The final run of the frame came after left fielder Ryan Calloway scored on a sacrifice fly by Butera for his team-high second RBI of the game.
The Rays bats added a final run in the ninth inning to push their lead to 6-1 and clinch the victory.
Princeton will now head to Bluefield to open the Mercer Cup series with one game on the road against the Blue Jays on Tue., July 5 at 7:05 p.m. before returning home for a six-game home stand beginning July 6.
