Rays Roll Past Royals 7-5

PRINCETON, WV- The Princeton Rays (16-9) won their second straight game against the Burlington Royals (15-11) by a final score of 7-5 on Wednesday night at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.

After a solo Burlington home run by first baseman Chris DeVito in the second inning, the Rays rallied for two runs in their half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Both runs scored on RBI-doubles from Princeton second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz and third baseman Blake Butera.

The Rays added to their lead with two additional runs in the third. The first run scored on a wild pitch by the Royals while the second was notched on a RBI-groundout by shortstop Adrian Rondon.

Three more Rays insurance runs in the fifth inning put the game out of the Royals reach and extended Princeton's lead to 7-1. The first run scored on a RBI-double by catcher Rafelin Lorenzo while the other two came on a two-run home run by Butera, his second of the season.

Burlington would go on to score two in the eighth and two in the ninth, but fell short of a comeback by two runs, 7-5.

Butera finished with a team-high three RBI in the contest on two hits while Tenerowicz notched three hits to lead the Rays.

On the mound for the Rays, starter Ethan Clark pitched six innings, giving up just one run on six hits and striking out four, earning his third win of the season.

Reliever Sam Long, in his second appearance for Princeton, followed and pitched one and two-thirds innings while giving up two runs before handing the ball over to Reimin Ramos. The Dominican-born Ramos closed out the game for the Rays, pitching one and one-third innings and giving up two runs for his third save of the season.

The Rays will try to sweep Burlington in the series rubber match on Thur., July 21 beginning at 11 a.m. at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
