Rays Late Burst Leads to 5-1 Win

PRINCETON, WV- The Princeton Rays (13-8) found a spark late on Saturday to open their series against the Elizabethton Twins (8-14) with a 5-1 win at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.

Neither team scored through six innings, but the Rays offense notched three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take the series opener.

Rays center fielder Oscar Rojas singled to open the seventh and begin the Rays offensive burst. Catcher Rafelin Lorenzo later doubled to score both Rojas and second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz, who was hit by a pitch. Lorenzo then scored himself on another Rays double, this one off the bat of third baseman Blake Butera.

Princeton extended its lead to 5-0 in the eighth, scoring one run on a RBI-single by Tenerowicz and another on an Elizabethton error.

The Twins notched one run in the top of the ninth, but Rays reliever Reimin Ramos closed out the game without further damage to preserve the 5-1 victory.

Rays starter Edrick Agosto pitched five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out four. Reliever Orlando Romero pitched three scoreless innings of his own, striking out one, and earned his first win of the season.

On offense, Rays shortstop Adrian Rondon, Butera, and Tenerowicz all finished with two hits on the night while Lorenzo led the team with two RBI.

Princeton will face Elizabethton in the second game of the series on Sun., July 17 beginning at 5 p.m. at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
