BLUEFIELD, WV- The Princeton Rays (6-7) dropped the first game of the 2016 Mercer Cup series 3-2 to the Bluefield Blue Jays (8-5) on Tuesday at Bowen Stadium.

The Rays took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after left fielder Trek Stemp doubled, then scored on a Blue Jays error, but Bluefield quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

The Blue Jays plated their first run on a RBI-single by third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., then added two more on a wild pitch by Princeton starter Resly Linares.

Linares pitched five innings, giving up three runs and six hits in the game while striking out five Blue Jays batters.

The Princeton bullpen gave the offense a chance to comeback as relievers Dalton Moats and Reimin Ramos pitched two and one scoreless innings, respectively.

The Rays bats couldn't quite complete the come back, though, and Princeton scored just one more run in the fourth on a solo home run by third baseman Blake Butera, his first of the season.

Butera finished the night with two hits, the only Rays player to record multiple hits in the game.

The Rays will return home for a six-game home stand beginning on Wed., July 6 at 7 p.m. against the Pulaski Yankees.
