Rays Fall 11-6 Despite Late Spark

PRINCETON, WV- The Princeton Rays (13-9) dropped the second game of the series against the Elizabethton Twins (9-14) by a score of 11-6 on Sunday at H.P. Hunnicutt Field, ending the Rays seven-game winning streak.

The loss marked Princeton's first since July 7.

Princeton recorded just five hits in the loss, but notched a run in the second and five in the ninth inning. The first Rays run scored in the second inning after second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz reached first base on a Twins error, then later scored on a RBI-groundout by catcher Rafelin Lorenzo.

The Rays attempted a late comeback in the ninth inning, scoring five runs in the frame, but eventually fell by a final score of 11-6.

Princeton's ninth-inning runs scored on a walk with the bases loaded, two wild pitches, and an Elizabethton error.

Rays first baseman Devin Davis led the team with two hits overall in the game while third baseman Juan Rodriguez, left fielder Isaac Benard, and Lorenzo all recorded one hit each.

The Twins, meanwhile, notched one run in the first, three in the third, one in the seventh, and six in the ninth to put the game out of Princeton's reach. Five of the six ninth-inning runs came off of home runs by Elizabethton designated hitter Amaurys Miller and second baseman Andre Jerrigan.

On the mound, Rays starter Hector Lopez pitched five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out four Twins batters.

Rays newcomer Sam Long, who joined the team on Saturday from the Gulf Coast League, pitched his first two innings in a Princeton uniform, giving up one run on two hits and striking out four. The appearance was Long's second of his career after being drafted in the 18th round of the 2016 MLB draft out of Sacramento State.

Rays reliever Alex Estrella closed out the game for Princeton, pitching two innings and giving up six runs on five hits while striking out one.

The Rays will look to take the series from Elizabethton in the rubber match on Mon., July 18 beginning at 7 p.m. at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
