Greeneville Astros News Release
Princeton, WV - The Greeneville Astros (29-29), making their first visit of the season to Hunnicutt Field, were edged out by the Princeton Rays (33-25) in a 1-0 game on Thursday night. With the win, the Rays jumped into first place in the Appalachian League East while the Astros are two games behind in the race for the final playoff spot in the West.
The start of the game was delayed by rain for over 90 minutes. Then, once the game began, both teams found it difficult to score.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Riley Unroe led off with a single for the Rays, the next two hitters struck out. However, with two outs, Hector Montes hit a ground ball RBI single into center field to bring Unroe all the way around for the score.
Astros' starting left-handed pitcher Reymin Guduan gave up one run on five hits and exited the game following the fifth inning, but not before he had picked up a season-high 10 strikeouts against one walk.
Elieser Hernandez and Jorge Perez followed Guduan and held the Rays scoreless on three combined hits over the next three innings. However, it was not enough.
The Astros finished with five total hits and were led by Bryan Muniz, who went two-for-three with a double. On the other side, the Rays had eight hits with Montes leading the way on a three-for-four night with a double and one RBI.
The winning pitcher for the Rays was reliever Freddy Alvarez. After entering the game in the fifth, Alvarez gave up just one hit over three scoreless innings while walking one and striking out four. Later, Tomas Michelson came in to get the final two outs in the ninth and finish the game to pick up the save, his third of the year.
The Astros will look to even the series with the Rays in game two on Friday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.
