Rays Drop One to Mobile
April 20, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release
Mobile, ALA â For the second straight night, the Orlando Rays were stung by the long ball, falling 5-3 to the Mobile BayBears on Sunday.
The Rays took a 3-1 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning, but a pair of Mobile home runs off Rays' reliever Bartolome Fortunato (0-1) highlighted a four run inning for the BayBears, pushing Mobile to a 5-3 lead. The home runs coupled with Orlando's four errors on the night pushed the Rays (7-10) to their third straight loss. All three losses have come at the hands of the BayBears, and all three losses were by a margin of two runs or less.
The loss came at the expense of a strong pitching performance by Rays' starter Jon Switzer, who allowed one earned run on three hits over 5.0 innings. The left-hander also struck out seven BayBears hitters while walking only two.
Offensively the Rays were led by Amado German and Felix Escalona, who had two hits apiece.
The series continues with game four of the four-game set tomorrow at 8:05 PM ET as right-hander Brian Stokes (0-2, 1.20) takes the mound for Orlando against BayBears' lefty Cory Stewart (0-2, 5.14). The Rays then travel to Birmingham Tuesday for a four-game series with the Barons before concluding their road trip with a four-game set with the Tennessee Smokies starting Saturday, April 26.
