Princeton WhistlePigs News Release

The Princeton Rays won their second consecutive series of the season with an 11-3 comeback win over the Danville Braves (3-3) at H.P. Hunnicutt Field on Tuesday night.

With the victory, the Rays improved to 4-2 on the season and have won both of the series they've played so far during the 2016 campaign.

Princeton's lineup came back from an early 3-2 deficit with a three-run sixth inning. Right fielder Eleardo Cabrera singled with one out in the frame, then scored on a home run off the bat of Rays first baseman Bobby Melley. The home run was Melley's first of his professional career after being taken by Tampa Bay in the 34th round of the 2016 MLB draft.

The Rays extended their lead to 5-3 with one more run in the sixth as center fielder Emilio Gustave singled, stole second base, advanced to third on an error, and later scored on a single by catcher Rafelin Lorenzo.

The Princeton bats pushed the game further out of Danville's reach with six runs in the eighth inning, securing the 11-3 win and the series victory.

Melley finished with a team-high three hits and three RBI in the game while second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz added three RBI of his own for Princeton.

On the mound for the Rays, starter Willy Ortiz pitched five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out three Braves batters.

Rays reliever Ethan Clark held Danville scoreless for the remaining four innings of the game and was credited with his first victory of the season.

The Rays will continue their current six-game home stand with a three-game series against the Greenville Astros beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.

The Princeton Rays have been the proud Appalachian League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays since 1997. All questions may be forwarded to the Rays' front office at 304-487-2000 or princetonrays@frontier.com.
