Rays Bats Slumber as Suns Roll

July 10, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release

ORLANDO —Jacksonville starting pitcher Heath Totten finally figured out the Orlando lineup, baffling O-Rays' hitters for a complete-game shutout as the Suns dropped the Rays 5-0 at Cracker Jack Stadium Thursday.

Totten (5-9) had been roughed up in his other four outings against the Rays, holding a 0-4 record with a 7.66 ERA. The right-hander had been tagged for 19 earned runs in 22.1 innings pitched against Orlando this season, but Thursday was a completely different story, as Orlando hitters connected for just four hits on the night. Frank Moore was the only O-Rays hitter to figure Totten out, connecting for a pair of doubles in a losing effort for Orlando (6-13).

Jacksonville used a four-run sixth off Orlando starter Scott Autrey (0-1), scoring four runs on five hits and two Orlando errors in the inning. Nick Alvarez hurt the O-Rays the most, going 3-4 with two RBI and one stolen base, while Shane Victorino singled, tripled and scored once for the Suns.

Orlando and Jacksonville will continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m., with RHP Jim Magrane (8-4, 3.53) starting for the Rays, while the Suns counter with RHP Edwin Jackson (4-6, 3.54).

Rays Notes

- With RHP Jose Veras throwing more pitches in the All-Star game than anticipated, the O-Rays have juggled the pitching rotation to give him a couple extra days off. RHP Jim Magrane, originally slated to start Sunday, will start tomorrow and Veras will take Magrane's Sunday slot.

- Catcher Danny Massiatte left the game in the seventh inning with what is being termed a bruised throwing hand, suffered after hitting his hand on either the bat or helmet of Suns OF Jason Repko. Repko's follow-through on a strikeout took him into Massiatte's throwing lane as he tried to gun down Victor Rodriguez at second base.

- Orlando catcher Chairon Isenia has been granted to leave to play in the 2003 World Games. Catcher Graig Merritt rejoined the O-Rays from Class A Bakersfield to take his roster spot.
