North Carolina Courage News Release
MONTERREY, Mexico - The North Carolina Courage reached another milestone on Thursday night, playing on foreign soil for the first time in club history. The international friendly featured a pair of two-time league champions in the Courage (NWSL) and Rayadas de Monterrey (Liga MX Femenil). The home side prevailed, 2-1, in an entertaining game in front of more than 7,000 fans at Estadio BBVA.
The Courage went down early after a handball in the box in the 3' set up a penalty for Rayadas. Their captain, Rebeca Bernal, stepped to the spot and, although Casey Murphy went the right direction, the shot was well-placed into the corner netting.
That 1-0 score would hold until the hour mark when Diana Evangelista was able to win the ball in a dangerous and tap it home to double the advantage.
The Courage had a flurry of chances in the second half and did crack the scoreboard to get back into the game. Kerolin Nicoli forced a loose ball in the box and rookie Olivia Wingate won the ball ahead of the Rayadas keeper and scored to trim the defecit to one. The Courage would get several good looks - and shots - in the final five minutes, but could not find the equalizer.
The Courage wrap up their trip to Mexico with two scrimmage wins over Liga MX Femenil teams and a great learning opportunity for this young team to build off of headed into the season opener on March 25 when the Courage host the Kansas City Current at 2:00 p.m. ET at WakeMed Soccer Park.
