Rattlers Head Coach Guy Van Arsdale Accepts Position at Notre Dame

(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Rattlers Head Coach Guy Van Arsdale announced today that he has resigned to take a Division I assistant coaching position at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
As a member of the Fighting Irish coaching staff, Van Arsdale will work under Head Coach Kevin Corrigan. Last season, Notre Dame was 9-5 and earned a share of the Great Western Lacrosse League championship with Ohio State and Denver.
"Like all things at Notre Dameâbe it in the classroom or on the fieldâthey want to be the best," said Van Arsdale. "It is nice to be a part of a university with that type of attitude. It is also tough to say âno' to.
"It is bittersweet leaving the Rattlers at this time because I feel they are on the cusp of making a major turn. With all the youth (on the team) and having a healthy squad from the get-go next year, Rattler fans should be excited about the team coming back," he added.
Van Arsdale was the head coach of the Major League Lacrosse Rochester Rattlers for three seasons. With one game remaining in the 2003 season, he has a career 18-21 record. In 2001 he enjoyed his finest season, going 8-6 and advancing to the MLL Semifinals.
In addition, Van Arsdale was an assistant coach for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League. For the past two seasons, he worked under Head Coach Paul Day. In both seasons, Rochester advanced to the postseason and during the 2002-03 campaign the K-Hawks were the regular-season champions and hosted the NLL Finals.
Prior to coaching the Rattlers, the native of Geneva, NY, was the head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he compiled a 112-54 record and earned eight postseason appearances in 12 seasons. Under his guidance, 38 players received All-American honors while at RIT. The all-time winningest coach in school history also led the Tigers to the ECAC title in 1998. In addition to his stint as head coach at RIT, Van Arsdale worked as an assistant at Hobart College from 1984-85 and at the University of Massachusetts from 1986-89.
As a player, he helped lead Hobart College to four NCAA Championships from 1980-83. He was a three-time Goalie of the Year selection and the 1983 Division III Player of the Year. He was inducted into the Western New York chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Geneva Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Van Arsdale was inducted into the Hobart College Hall of Fame in October 2001.
Van Arsdale has one son, Max, and one daughter, Mya, and he resides in Pittsford. Max plays high school lacrosse for Georgetown Prep and was a member of the 2003 team that was the No. 1 team in the country.
