Rascals Take 2-0 Series Lead With Another Walk-Off Win

September 9, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

O'FALLON, MO - The Rascals blew a seven run lead, but Chad Maddox's single in the tenth propelled River City past the ThunderBolts 9-8 Wednesday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Rascals will look for the three game sweep Friday night when the two teams meet at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, IL.

River City (2-0) used back-to-back errors by Windy City to plate an unearned run in the tenth. Gilberto Mejia bobbled a groundball off Joe Chavarria's bat and Robert Perry dropped a ball in centerfield with Scott Houin hitting to put two runners on with one out. Ty Pryor (0-1) struck out JoJo Batten, but Maddox lined a single into center that scored Chavarria easily from second for another walk-off victory.

Windy City (0-2) fought all the way back from an 8-1 deficit with seven straight runs in the final three frames. Josh Rose came in for the eighth and allowed three runs on a home run by Gil Zayas, a double by Bryan Cook and a Mejia single to make it an 8-5 contest.

Brent Solich entered in the ninth and surrendered consecutive singles to Perry and J.T. Restko to bring Zayas to the plate. Zayas promptly sent the first pitch over the wall in left for a three run homer, his second of the night, to tie the game at eight.

The Rascals pounced to an early lead, knocking 13 game winner, Ross Stout, out of the ballgame after five innings. Ernie Banks launched a two run shot in the first and added his second blast with two outs in the third to give River City a 4-0 lead.

It looked like it would be enough for Jake Laber, who earned a no-decision despite six strong innings. The southpaw allowed only two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Laber left the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh, but Tony Marsala got out of the jam surrendering only one tally.

Maddox and Banks would strike again for the Rascals in the fifth. Maddox lifted a sacrifice fly and Banks had a single for a 6-1 lead. Houin and Batten put River City on top 8-1 on a single and sacrifice fly respectively in the sixth.

Stout went five frames and allowed six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The Bolts ace allowed two home runs to Banks after allowing only eight in 143.2 innings during the regular season.

Jason Lowey (2-0) picked up his second win, working the final 1.2 innings for River City. The closer allowed one hit and struck out three.

Banks was the offensive hero with three hits and four knocked in. Houin, Wehrle, Gutierrez and Chavarria all had two hits in the victory.

Dan Jordan finished with a pair of hits, including his second home run of the series with a solo shot in the fifth off Laber. Zayas was 2-5 with the two long balls and four runs batted in.

The Rascals and Bolts are off tomorrow before resuming their best of five series on Friday night in Windy City. Daniel Howard (6-5) will oppose game one loser, Dustin Pease (0-1), on the mound. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:45 p.m. Progress West Healthcare Center pre-game show on Classic Hits Westplex 100.7 FM and online at www.kfns.com.
