Rascals fall in exhibition game at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, KS - The River City Rascals kicked off their 2009 exhibition schedule with a 9-5 loss in Kansas City to the T-Bones.
The Rascals got on the board early with four runs in the first as the first four hitters got on base. Jorge Gutierrez reached on a Damian Rolls throwing error and Joseph Batten followed with an infield single. Kevin Reynolds doubled to plate both runners and he came around to score on a Chris Colton triple. Scott Houin ended the scoring explosion in the first with an RBI groundout.
The T-Bones struck back in the third as third baseman Damian Rolls clobbered a three-run homer over the left field fence off Rascals reliever, Eric Cordell. Rolls wasn't finished as the third baseman lifted a two-run shot to left field in the fifth to tie the game at five.
Kansas City tacked on two more in the seventh on a two-run homer by Ryan Fox off Joaquin Lopez. The T-Bones added one each in the eighth and ninth innings for their nine runs.
The Rascals scored their final run in the fifth on a Chad Maddox RBI triple, scoring Phil Laurent from first.
River City sent six pitchers to the bump as starter, Jake Laber, was the only hurler not to allow a run. Laber went two innings and allowed three hits while striking out two. Laber was followed by Cordell (two innings, three runs), Lopez (two innings, two runs), Jared Sutton (one inning, two runs), Adam Tollefson (one inning, one run), and Tony Marsala (one inning, one run).
Batten and Reynolds led the Rascals offense with two hits apiece. Aharon Eggleston and John Urick each had three hits for the T-Bones. Rolls finished 2-3 with the two homers and six runs batted in.
The Rascals open their home exhibition schedule Wednesday night as the Joliet JackHammers from the Northern League visit T.R. Hughes Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast at www.kfns.com. Rascals play-by-play voice, Jason Lamar, will call the action.
