
Grizzles Win Exhibition Game

SAUGET, ILL.-A crowd of 2,974 watched as the Gateway Grizzlies defeated the Southern Illinois Miners 6-2 Tuesday afternoon in an exhibition game at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies picked up 14 hits in their first tune-up game of the spring.
Gateway scored twice in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie and never trailed after that point. Stephen Holdren and Chad Rothford each drove in runs in the inning for the Grizzlies.
Rothford, Steve Mena and Dan Maycock each had RBIs in a three-run fifth inning that put the Grizzlies up 6-1. Rothford finished the day 2-2 with the pair of RBIs. Mena, an outfielder, was 2-5 with the RBI and a run scored. Maycock, a formerly with the River City Rascals, finished 1-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Southern Illinois managed just four hits off seven Grizzlies hurlers. Nathan Melek and Joel Boeschen each tossed two innings to start the game. Melek allowed only an unearned run in the second. Boeschen tossed two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two. He was credited with the win.
Relievers Wilmer Rojas and John Maschino each struck out the side in one inning of relief. Grizzlies pitchers struck out nine Miner's hitters.
The Grizzlies and Miners will play another exhibition game Wednesday at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill.
