June 28, 2019 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. - The River City Rascals shutout the Gateway Grizzlies 4-0 in their series finale on Thursday night at CarShield Field, earning the 2-1 series victory in the process. Starting pitcher Taylor Ahearn (1-0) went seven scoreless innings in the win, allowing just four hits and striking out six without issuing a walk in his second start with the team.
Neither team scored until the fifth, when Nolan Meadows put the Rascals up 1-0 on an RBI double. The Rascals then tacked on three more in the seventh, taking advantage of three Grizzlies defensive errors in the frame. Braxton Martinez scored on a ball bobbled by third baseman Christian Funk, after Andrew Penner singled in a run, another scored on the same sequence when catcher Zak Taylor couldn't handle a throw from the outfield on a play at the plate.
The Grizzlies had two on with one out in the eighth, but Jamey Smart lined into a double play ball with Taylor getting caught off of second base to end the threat. Anthony Herrera and Andrew Vernon each pitched a scoreless inning out of the Rascals bullpen.
Grizzlies starter Lucas Lanphere (1-4) pitched into the seventh, allowing four runs, only one of which were earned, on four hits with two walks and six striketouts.
The Rascals (22-19) hit the road for a three-game set against the Evansville Otters beginning tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT at historic Bosse Field. Rookie Micah Kaczor will take the bump in his second career start.
