Watertown Rams News Release
A familiar face will be manning the dugout this summer in Watertown for the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League's Watertown Rams. Paul Alteri (Watertown Wizards, 2001-2003) has been named the team's head coach for the 2013 season.
Alteri is no stranger to the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds and Watertown baseball. He was the head coach of the New York Collegiate Baseball League's Watertown Wizards from 2001 through 2003. Alteri's three-year stint at the helm of the Wizards culminated with a then franchise record 26 victories in 2003 and a divisional playoff appearance against the eventual league champion Amsterdam Mohawks. Alteri is second on the franchise's all-time wins list and over 30 of his former players have gone on to sign professional contracts.
"We are thrilled to have Paul Alteri on board for the upcoming season" said Wizards Co-owner Kristine Czajkowski. "The PGCBL over the past two years has established itself as a top destination for players and coaches. We have thought a lot about the direction we wanted to go with our Head Coach. To be a top team in this league, you have to have a capable leader, someone who can develop and identify with these top level athletes. Paul's background is exceptional, and, we love the fact that we have someone of his caliber right in our back yard. Anytime we can bring in someone qualified that is also native to our area it is a win-win situation and at the end of the day it is about winning. We are confident that Paul can help us pursue our goals of a PGCBL Championship."
Alteri has served as the Head Coach for Team USA's Under-16 and Under-18 squads. He also coached the Senior National Teams at the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Gold Medal Games, where he worked alongside 14-year Major League Baseball veteran Walt Weiss. In addition, Paul spent 12 years (1996-2009) as the Head Baseball Coach at Jefferson (N.Y.) Comm. College. He was named the NJCAA's Division III Region III Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002.
"I am extremely excited and can't wait to get back on the field", stated Paul Alteri. "This is a challenging time to be a Head Coach in the PGCBL. Baseball is baseball though and I feel that I am certainly ready to accept this challenge. I have always wanted to get back on the field and with the U16 and U18 team USA teams and that coaching assignment, that just stoked the fire to get back out there. I thank the Ram management for this opportunity and look forward to developing future pros and winning baseball games."
The Watertown Rams open their 2013 PGCBL schedule on June 5 at Adirondack. The Rams will hold their home opener be on June 6 against Elmira. Check out the league schedule at www.pgcbl.com.
