Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - The Grand Rapids Rampage added even more NFL experience to their training camp roster, signing former Detroit Lions wide receiver Scotty Anderson (Jonesboro, La.). The all-time career leader in every major receiving category at Grambling State University will get his first chance to shine in the Arena Football League when training camp begins Monday (Feb. 5).
The 6-2, 193-pound Anderson spent three seasons (2001-03) with the Lions, totaling 54 receptions for 858 yards and four touchdowns in 34 games. He emerged as a deep threat during his final season with the team, finishing third in receiving yards (325) despite missing the final seven games of the year due to an ankle injury. Anderson accounted for the Lions' three longest plays from scrimmage that year, including a 72-yard touchdown catch that marked the team's longest play since 2001.
Detroit selected Anderson in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2001 draft following his stellar career at Grambling State. Anderson's 195 receptions, 3,334 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns all set school career marks. He became the only player in school history to gain over 1,000 receiving yards in a season twice (1999 and 2000) and earned all-America honors both years. Current Rampage defensive coordinator and director of player personnel Robert Smith coached Anderson during the wide receiver's sophomore season in 1998.
"Scotty will need to make some adjustments in order to adapt to the AFL," said Smith. "But he has completely healed and we fully expect him to compete for a spot on our roster."
Anderson spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons in camps with the Lions, the Arizona Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League last year.
Also joining the Rampage training camp roster will be offensive lineman Jeff Bolton (Hailey, Idaho), who originally signed with the AFL's San Jose SaberCats before being acquired by the Rampage. The 6-3, 306-pound Montana State University product participated in training camp with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks this past season after an extremely successful collegiate career. In 2005, Bolton earned the Rimington Award as NCAA Division I-AA's top center while serving as the Bobcats' team captain. He was named to the All-Big Sky Conference First Team in both his junior and senior seasons, and was an honorable mention selection following his sophomore campaign.
The Rampage also waived two-year AFL veteran linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mattawan, Mich.).
Grand Rapids begins its training camp Monday at 8:00 a.m. at The Soccer Spot in Kentwood, Mich. The Rampage kick off their 10th Anniversary Season in Denver on March 4 against the Colorado Crush before hosting the Las Vegas Gladiators on March 8 for their home opener.
